Omnisky not omnipresent

Mon Jul 30, 2001 - 8:42 PM EDT - By James Hromadka

Earlier this year Omnisky began trials in Europe for its wireless service. It appears that the company will not be offering its services there after all. One of our readers received the following email from Omnisky:
Dear [user],

We are nearing the completion of our beta trials in Europe and have determined not to continue with a consumer-focused offering under the OmniSky brand. We regret any inconvenience this may cause
for you, our valued customer. We intend to use the valuable insights you have provided during the beta trial in the services platform we anticipate offering to wireless carriers, online service providers, hardware manufacturers and others that may deliver wireless services
to European consumers.

The OmniSky European service will be discontinued on August 3rd, 2001.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your participation in our beta programme, and to wish you every success in the future.

Best wishes,

If you're an EU beta tester, enjoy it while it lasts. This economic downturn is starting to get on my nerves. At least the beta used VisorPhones, so European users aren't stuck with a dead module. That's the nice thing about GSM -- it's much easier to change providers, although in this case the Omnisky software won't work anymore.
