Encrypt all of your data

Mon Dec 11, 2000 - 5:59 PM EST - By James Hromadka

JAWZ, Inc., a provider of secure end-to-end management solutions, released today DataGator™, the first product of its kind to automatically encrypt all Palm OS data.

Here is the full press release with plenty of information on the product:

PALMSOURCE, 2000 - JAWZ Inc. (NASDAQ:JAWZ - news), a leading provider of secure end-to-end information management solutions, today launched their innovative product called DataGator™. DataGator is the first product of its kind to automatically encrypt all data on Palm™ O/S handheld devices.

JAWZ DataGator provides an application-independent method for maintaining encrypted data on Palm O/S handheld devices. It works seamlessly in the background to secure the data of all record-based applications and is compatible with Palm O/S 3.0 or greater. It is also compatible with Handspring Visor, IBM WorkPad PC Companions, Qualcomm pdQ smartphone, Sony Clie and Symbol SPT 1700 and 1740.

``DataGator is a phenomenal new product that easily and automatically protects your personal data on your Palm,'' said Robert Kubbernus, Chairman and CEO, JAWZ Inc. ``This product truly enables JAWZ end-to-end security -- from the server, to the desk-top, and now to handheld Palm devices.''

``As Phase One of the rollout of our comprehensive, multi-platform mobile and wireless security suite, I am delighted to be launching DataGator. This product targets the industry-leading, 10 million plus Palm O/S-based devices in the marketplace,'' said Tej Minhas, Chief Technology Officer at JAWZ Inc. ``Given the critical need for robust security on mobile devices and the innovative design features of DataGator, we anticipate a strong positive response from users, executives and the corporate IT community.''

Until JAWZ launched DataGator, most existing security applications for the Palm restricted access to the device by requiring a password when the device was turned on. This front door was easily bypassed and the sensitive data on the Palm became available to the hacker or thief. In many cases an owner had to remember to turn the device off in a certain way or do something special to protect their data. These additional steps, being manual, were easily forgotten, wasted time and did not guarantee that data was protected. DataGator automates all these cumbersome processes and also ensures automatic encryption of all data.

There are three versions of the DataGator available: the Standard version, the Professional version and the Enterprise version. In the Standard version, a person's Address Book, Date Book, To Do list, and Memo Pad, plus any passphrases and personal information they have stored within these applications are secured by 448-bit Blowfish or 168-bit triple-DES encryption technology for US $39.95. In the Professional version, data in all applications, including third party applications will be protected through secure encryption for US $49.95. Enterprise versions can be created and priced on a case-by-case basis according to a company's IT deployment specifications.

As a security professional within the industry, Wayne Simmerson, Security Officer at ING Direct, had the opportunity to test DataGator in advance of its launch and he had this to say about it: ``I have been using the JAWZ DataGator personally for awhile now on my Handspring Visor. Its seamless integration into the Palm OS was a delight. The configurable aspect incorporated so far ensures that your information is secure, yet simple enough to retrieve with only a marginal amount of waiting time. I look forward to reviewing the upcoming versions for other Personal Data Assistant and the network administration portion of this unique product.''

DataGator is easy to use with installation taking less than 3 minutes. Preserving the ``Palm Experience'' was a key objective for the JAWZ team when developing this product. DataGator has a very small footprint that uses minimal memory resources (approx. 150 KB footprint) in order to maximize performance speed. It only encrypts or decrypts the data on applications, which the owner has opened, leaving the rest in a secure, encrypted state. DataGator allows software to be loaded from most major computer platforms including Windows, MAC*, and Linux*. (*Mac and Linux require manual installation.)

Once installed, JAWZ DataGator runs as if it were part of the Palm O/S and ships with its own configuration software. This is of particular benefit to Palm O/S software developers as DataGator provides leading edge security without the need to change or retrofit any applications. With the explosion in the demand for mobile and wireless applications, DataGator is a critical security tool for vertical application developers who want to protect their customers' data.

Single-user license pricing is available through the JAWZ website www.jawzinc.com or at two distribution partners: www.palmgear.com, and www.handango.com. Multi-user license discounts are available by contacting a JAWZ sales associate at 1-888-301-5297.
