US Post Office Using Palm Organizers

Tue Sep 14, 1999 - 11:30 PM EDT - By James Hromadka

The US Post office has began testing the Symbol SPT 1740 PDAs to track late packages at many of the airports where air mail is carried. The USPS went with the Symbol device, which is based on the Palm operating system, because the interface is less intimidating and the device is rugged.

The fact that the Symbol device does not look like a computer makes it easier to pick up how to use the Symbol device. The USPS considered Windows CE, but went with Symbol because of the lower learning curve.

The biggest test will come this Christmas. If all goes well, you may find normal letter carriers packing a Palm device. Find the full article at PC Week.
