Virus story #42

Wed Aug 30, 2000 - 10:53 AM EDT - By James Hromadka

It's time for another round of "here come the PDA viruses." ZDNet has this article that not only recaps the recent PalmLiberty.A trojan but forcasts doom and gloom, including the statement that "the program has spread because users believe it to be a way to circumvent paying for the Liberty 1.1. application, which allows them to play Game Boy games on the Palm." To date, there has been no reported data loss as a result of the trojan.

The article also points out that (thankfully) there is currently no macro scripting in the Palm and Windows CE platforms but warns that Bluetooth could be suspect. All the Bluetooth vendors need to do is have a prompt that comes up when someone tries to send you information. Just as Palm-compatibles have a message asking if you want to accept an Ir transmission, Bluetooth will probably have this feature as well.
