Mon Apr 22, 2002 - 10:06 AM EDT - By Marcus Adolfsson

Handspring and AirPrime today announced that Handspring has selected AirPrime's Helium 1X embedded module platform to power the future CDMA version of Treo, a compact communicator that combines a mobile phone, wireless applications like e-mail, messaging and Internet browsing and Palm OS organizer, into one compact device.

"AirPrime and Handspring have worked closely over the past several months to integrate the wireless CDMA2000 1X engine needed to power Treo," said Joe Sipher, vice president of product marketing for Handspring.

"We've been very impressed with AirPrime's ability to function as an extension of Handspring's development team, their on-time delivery of reliable hardware, and the dedication of their team to this important program. The incorporation of AirPrime's Helium 1X embedded module into Treo will help us further expand our reach into the fast-growing North American wireless market."

Last month, Handspring announced an agreement to work with Sprint on a new CDMA version of the Handspring Treo communicator that will operate on Sprint's Third Generation Network. The new 3G 1X device will be co-branded by Sprint and Handspring and is expected to launch nationwide mid-2002.

"As a CDMA wireless device that combines voice, data and PDA functionality in a small form factor, Treo has significant market potential, especially in North America. We're very pleased that Handspring's CDMA Treo will use our Helium 1X module," said Anthony Gioeli, president for AirPrime.

"Being selected by a top innovator of personal communications products validates our ability to meet the aggressive schedules of our OEM partners with innovative, best-in-class CDMA wireless solutions."

"The high speeds and advanced functionality enabled by CDMA2000 1X wireless networks appeal to a large number of mobile professionals who desire the ability to stay connected wirelessly," said Perry LaForge, executive director for the CDMA Development Group (CDG).

"By designing Treo for CDMA2000 1X networks, AirPrime and Handspring are further driving the adoption of 3G wireless products and services. The CDG applauds these companies for their efforts in bringing next-generation CDMA to commercial availability."

Containing the latest CDMA2000 1X technology to support high-speed packet data rates, AirPrime's Helium 1X family of embedded modules are small, lightweight and support multiple frequency band configurations to achieve an optimal balance of functionality, coverage and cost for the given application.

To support diverse customer requirements, the Helium 1X embedded modules are available today in multiple mechanical form factors and support both voice and data services including SMS (short message services).
