Battle of the Handheld Platforms

Tue Sep 14, 1999 - 11:30 PM EDT - By James Hromadka

On November 2nd, Palm, Microsoft, Psion, & DataRover will meet in a "Battle of the Platforms" to work together to create a cross-platform standard for mobile data access.

This has the potential for future handheld devices to have some of the enterprise capabilities that users have wanted: "Intranet, Internet, POP3/Lotus/Microsoft/Novell mail clients, ODBC Database Access, 3270 Emulation, corporate/department LAN server connectivity, and future voice-over IP." Some of these components are available now through 3rd-party implementation, but this "Battle" hopes to create a standard that future handheld devices will adhere to.
