Sprint recommends
fully charging the battery before first using the module. Just
attach the travel charger to the hotsync connector on the bottom
of the Visor. The charger is capable of charging Visor handhelds
with rechargeable batteries (Prism, Edge, and Pro) as well as any other rechargeable
modules that can be charged while in the Springboard slot.
Additionally, the Digital Link
can be recharged from any Handspring charging cradle. However,
there is no provision to recharge the SB3000
outside of the Springboard slot.
While charging, the Battery LED will be red. When the battery is
fully charged (approximately 4 hours when completely rundown) the
LED changes to green.
The nice thing about Lithium Ion batteries is that they do not
need to be completely drained before recharging and do not suffer
from "memory" effect like NiCad's do. When the charger
is not connected to the Visor, the Battery LED
is off and does not show any status. You need to view the on-screen
battery indicator in the Phone App display to
see the current battery level.
Once your battery is fully charged, you'll need to activate
the phone. Sprint PCS offers three convenient options:
- Dial *, 2, Talk
from the Digital Link
itself to connect to a Sprint PCS Customer Advocate.
- Online activation via the Sprint PCS web
site.
- Toll-free through Sprint PCS Customer Care at 1-888-715-4588
from any phone other than the Digital
Link.
The activation process can take up to 30 minutes if you're a
new customer; slightly less for existing customers adding or
changing to the Digital Link.
Having activated several Sprint PCS phones, I recommend the toll-free
number for first time customers. This way, you can inquire about
the various available plans and options which are not always
listed on the website, and they can inform you about their
current special offers.
Sprint PCS recommends using one of their Total
Digital Connections plans with the Digital
Link. These plans include the Wireless Web and
Voice Command (voice dialing) options along with an adequate
supply of airtime minutes, including free long distance. The
module will also work with their Free & Clear or Family (Add-a-Phone)
plans, though the Wireless Web and Voice Command options are
typically extra. The Wireless Web option is required to fully
utilize the data features of both the Digital
Link and the Sprint PCS network.
