Study: "Strong Growth Predicted For Personal Digital Devices"

Thu Jan 27, 2000 - 10:13 AM EST - By Marcus Adolfsson

According to a recent study by Strategy Analytics, US customers spent 7.3 billion dollars on personal digital deviceds during 1999.

Devices covered in the study include cell phones, handhelds, notebooks, mp3 players, and digital cameras.

Notebooks and phones each owns about a third of the market.

"The holy grail for many manufacturers is the lightweight, intelligent device that attends to your every communication, information and entertainment need," says David Mercer, senior Analyst with Strategy Analytics. "Such products are unlikely to meet consumer performance and price expectations until the second half of this decade. In the meantime, the boundaries between today's devices will increasingly overlap."

This year the study predicts sales will reach about $10 billion (a 35% growth rate). In 2001 and beyond the growth rate is predicted at about 22 percent a year.
