Wild Blue Yonder

In our recent SoundOff on missing Springboard modules, we've already seen some great ideas. Here's something for the aviators: Oxford Signal Processing is in development of two Springboard modules that can be used in sail planes.

The Visor Vision Module accepts two channels of NTSC video, displays image sequences and captures images for HotSync to PC. It uses a standard Springboard battery case, two AAA NiCd or NiMH batteries and has a built-in charger. It operates from internal batteries or operates/charges from external power. It is primarily for IR imaging applications but can be used with any device that outputs NTSC video.

The Visor Avionics Module (VAM) transforms the Visor into a low-cost, integrated instrumentation package for sail planes. It accepts analog and GPS inputs and performs the following functions:
  • Variometer with total energy compensation and audio output.
  • Speed-to-fly director with audio output
  • Glide slope calculator
  • Wind calculator
  • Barograph
  • Flight recorder
  • Clock/chronograph
  • Glider-battery voltmeter
The VAM also uses a standard Springboard battery case, two AAA NiCd or NiMH batteries, and has a built-in charger. It can operate and charge the internal batteries using the glider's battery. The internal batteries take over when glider power fails.

Both Springboard modules are still under development so pricing and availability are not known at this time.
