James finds sound quality good even with poor signal strength
I asked James some clarifying questions by email. He asked me to post them for others. Here's an abbreviated version (since I think the form will mess up any formatting). First, I asked about performance in weak signal areas. He said: "It worked fine even with a signal ticker of 1 mark when I visited my parents on the outskirts of the Houston area. I found the sound quality to be acceptable for a cell phone and never had any crackling or distortion." I then asked how consistent the sound quality was with poor signal strength, when not using the cheap included headset. He said: "Much better. I didn't notice any variation based on signal strength." Side comment (not in email exchange): I'm asking these questions because I've heard early reports of weak signal and/or echo problems compared to standalone mobile phones and want to know if they're a real/serious/current problem or not. See http://www.techtv.com/freshgear/firstlook/jump/0,23009,3302701,00.html for comments on the sound quality -- that was a pre-production unit, however.

150 minutes
Ive checked on some of the service plans and the 150 minutes you are refering to include free nights and weekends. With only a contract for 1 year I think it is a good investment.

Looks Good to me, but I can't get it :(
If I had hadn't just bought a new phone and the Minstrel I probably would go out and buy it. The review is great James, keep up all of the photo's.

Almost perfect but its quite good
Well I got visorphone w/o service plan ($500 ouch) but right after my nokia 6190 died.. So good timing. I use it quite often it works well most of the time. The headpiece kinda sucks. If you use a higher quality headpiece like the Vtech headset or the Plantronics you'll get crisp sound on both ends. I have tested the hell out of my visorphone. The 14.4 modem is fast enuff to allow me to Telnet/SSH into work and to do Instant messaging (AOL,ICQ,Yahoo). Also do email and light web browsing. It works well as long as you have a clear signal. The first few days it kept crashing the TCP/IP module in it and I had to do a hard reset and restore . So I got my backup module. Say the least since I've gotten the back-up module it hasnt crashed :-) . it can be pricey but well worth if it if you want to carry *one* Small device that does everything anywhere. Also the 14.4 modem does does not handle Fax class 2.0 software. So its a neigh on that arena. Also it doesnt allow you to add to your SIM card. (Hoping firmware updates will circumvent this feature). It has a few cons but in my book it has big Pros which is why I got it my thumbs up. Lithium Ion battery helps IMMENSELY :)

EXPENSIVE
expensive module and service plan.

Step in the right direction
Yes, it is bulky compared to current cell phones, but you can't have a PIM in the current cell phone displays without going blind. Excellent first generation of an integrated cell phone, PIM, and web browser.

SW could be better.
The review is very exhaustive and highlight the good things about this module. I miss the calling card function that I use a lot for intl calls. and also the fact that the visorphone does not work out of the visor is a problem. I tried to connect it to a modified "energy clip" from "sounds good". Then it works and can ring so at least you know someone is calling you, but you cannot take the line pushing the phone button and the missed call is not recorded when you plug it back into the Visor. I am looking forwad to get the "visorphone clip" released any news on that one ?

I think this is a really good cellphone, though it could be a bit smaller or wiegh less, now i have no need for maintaining a contact list in another devise. I lick it so much i gave my mother my nokia 8260

TOO expensive Service Plan Monopoly!
Hey, its Great! If you can afford a 40 bucks a month for only 150 minutes time, and 35 cents thereafter. Better Keep them calls QUICK and use that internet connection SPARINGLY.
